Great River Energy’s DryFiningTM Project

Great River Energy's Coal Drying Project
Project Name:
Great River Energy
Project Description:

Installation of a commercial coal drying system that refines 100% of lignite used at the Coal Creek Station. The beneficiation process reduces moisture content and removes impurities, resulting in a higher BTU value coal, a more efficient plant, and fewer emissions.

Coal Creek Station, 50 miles north of Bismarck, ND
Project Value:
23 contractor companies, 801 peak manpower
Time Frame:
1997 – 2010
Project Details:

Coal Creek Station began a coal drying development effort in 2003 with a consortium of industry stakeholders, including EPRI, EERC, LeHigh, and state and federal agencies. The project grew into a 75 tons per hour prototype unit and was installed from 2005 to 2006. After successful testing, a full-scale unit was developed and approved, and the installation occurred from 2007 to 2009. The DryFining project refines 100% of the low-grade lignite coal used at Coal Creek Station, lowering total moisture content from 39.5% to about 29.5%, resulting in a 5% reduction in coal consumption and a multiple point plant efficiency gain. Dryfining also removes high-density impurities, resulting in significant sulfur and mercury emission reductions.
