At JDI Contracts, complex industrial challenges are addressed with precision, collaboration, and a focus on long-term results. A recent power plant project demonstrates not only the company’s technical capabilities in water treatment and slurry separation, but also its commitment to developing engineers while delivering meaningful impact for clients.

Dane Kennedy, a Mechanical Engineer in Training at JDI Contracts, supported the engineering effort for a power plant ash pond cleanup project. As an early-career engineer, Dane was given the opportunity to contribute to a technically demanding system while learning directly from seasoned engineers and project leaders. Working extensively in SolidWorks, he helped develop design packages that translated complex concepts into clear, buildable solutions.
The project focused on designing a water cleaning system capable of separating slurry from an ash pond into two controlled outputs. One output produces clarified water that can be reused elsewhere within the facility. The second isolates the remaining sludge, which is safely removed and managed as compliant waste. This approach supports environmental responsibility while improving operational efficiency.
From Engineering Design to Fabricated Skid
The system was engineered and fabricated as a self-contained skid. Structural steel I-beams form the framework that supports pumps, piping, and valves, allowing for efficient installation and reliable operation. Within the process tank, water is heated and separated from the sludge, creating a consistent and effective treatment process suitable for industrial environments.

Throughout the design phase, close coordination between engineering, fabrication, and the client was essential. Dane worked alongside senior engineers to ensure drawings were accurate, easy to interpret, and aligned with fabrication requirements. Clear communication helped prevent delays and ensured the final system performed as intended once deployed.
Learning Within a Strong Engineering Culture
As an engineer-in-training, Dane benefits from an environment that prioritizes mentorship and accountability. JDI Contracts empowers its engineers to ask questions, collaborate across disciplines, and take ownership of their work while being supported by experienced professionals.
Leadership plays a critical role in reinforcing this culture. Under the guidance of Roger, JDI Contracts emphasizes integrity, responsiveness, and follow-through. Commitments made to clients are met, and often exceeded, through clear communication and timely decision-making. This leadership approach enables teams to respond quickly and effectively to client needs.
A Project Focused on Real Impact
This project was not only about cleaning an ash pond. It was about delivering measurable impact for the client and the facility as a whole, including:
Reduced environmental risk
Lower operating costs
Avoided regulatory fines
Cleaner reuse of water
Faster deployment with minimal disruption to operations
Proven Leadership in Water Treatment Solutions
This power plant project highlights JDI Contracts’ experience in designing and fabricating water-treatment and slurry-separation systems for demanding industrial applications. By combining experienced leadership, skilled engineering teams, and a commitment to clear communication, JDI Contracts delivers solutions that protect the environment, reduce costs, and help clients operate with confidence.
JDI Contracts continues to position itself as a knowledgeable, resourceful, and trusted leader in this space while investing in the growth of the next generation of engineers.
